War Story:
I crewed this gunship from Feb 1967 through February 3rd, 1968 and certainly remember this day. We were supporting a sniffer mission for a unit from the 101st Airborne. The slicks reported taking fire and could see the large green tracers coming from over a mile away. I remember a round hit below my seat and punctured the fuel cell. The impact actually lifted me into the air. Naturally we were streaming fuel which finally leveled at 200 pounds. We dove to a lower level and flew back to Chu Lai. We landed with almost nothing left in those tanks. The gunner that day was SP4 Lee Plummer. Submitted by SP5 Richard Konnen at the 2000 VHCMA Reunion

Accident Summary:

AT APPROXIMATELY 1300 HRS ON THE 27TH OF JAN 71 THE ABOVE MENTIONED AIRCRAFT ALONG WITH ANOTHER UH-1C DEPARTED TUY HOA AAF IN SUPPORT OF THE C/75TH RANGERS. AFTER DEPARTING TUY HOA ON A SOUTHWEST HEADING AND AT AN ALTITUDE OF 600-700 FT. THE CO-PILOT, WHO WAS AT THE CONTROLS AT THE TIME, NOTICED A COUPLE OF SHARP JAWS IN THE AIRCRAFT AND GLANCING AT THE INSTRUMENTS NOTICED THE RPM HAD DETERIORATED TO 6200 RPM. THE CO-PILOT IMMEDIATELY LOWERED THE PITCH AND INFORMED THE PILOT THAT HE THOUGHT THEY WERE HAVING AN ENGINE FAILURE. THE PILOT THEN TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND NOTICING THE RPM HAD INCREASED TO 6800 RPM PULLED IN SOME PITCH TO GET THE RPM BACK DOWN. BECAUSE THE RPM THEN STABILIZED AT 6500-6600 THE PILOT THOUGHT THAT MAYBE HE WAS EXPERIENCING A LOW SIDE GOVERNOR FAILURE. DURING THIS TIME THE AIRCRAFT HAD DROPPED FROM 600-700 FT TO 300-400 FT. WHEN THE AIRCRAFT HAD REACHED AN ALTITUDE OF APPROXIMATELY 300 FT THE ENGINE QUIT COMPLETELY AND THE PILOT COMMITTED HIMSELF TO THE AUTOROTATION. BECAUSE OF HIS LOW ALTITUDE WHEN THE ENGINE FAILED THE PILOT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL IN TURNING THE AIRCRAFT INTO THE WIND AND THEREFORE AUTOROTATED DOWNWIND INTO A RICE PADDY. THE AIRCRAFT DID NOT TOUCH DOWN HARD, HOWEVER WITH THE GROUND SPEED THE AIRCRAFT SLID APPROXIMATELY 4 SKID LENGTHS INTO THE RICE PADDY AND THROUGH A SMALL DIKE SURROUNDING THE PADDY. IN HIS EFFORTS TO KEEP THE AIRCRAFT NOSE FROM BURYING IN THE MUD AND CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO ROLL OVER THE PILOT APPLIED FULL AFT CYCLIC. THE FULL AFT CYCLIC COUPLED WITH THE AUTOROTATION TOUCH DOWN CAUSED THE MAIN ROTORS TO STRIKE THE TAIL BOOM, AND CAUSED MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. AT APPROXIMATELY 100 FT THE PILOT OF THE SECOND AIRCRAFT FLYING WITH 66-610 STATED THAT HE NOTICED FLAMES SHOOTING OUT FROM THE TAIL CONE OF THE ENGINE AND THAT THESE FLAMES CONTINUED UNTIL SHORTLY AFTER TOUCHDOWN.\\
